Stylophone Retro Pocket Synth

The Stylophone is a miniature stylus operated synthesizer invented in 1967 and used by such iconic musicians as David Bowie, Kraftwerk and Erasure. It features a metal keyboard played by touching it with a stylus. That's right, over four decades ago with computers the size of a gymnasium and nary a PDA in sight the Stylophone was a portable electronic music instrument with stylus based control. This exact recreation of the original sounds the same as it did in the 60s. Simply remove the pen and tap any key for classic synth sounds. There is a switch to add vibrato and you can choose from one of three different retro organ type sounds. The tuning knob on the bottom allows for some pitch-bend effects if you must. The Stylophone is one of the simplest electronic instruments you will find, but it's minimal style is a big part of its charm.

Midnight Shot NV-1 Night Vision Camera

Midnight Shot NV-1 Night Vision Camera

Digital cameras aren't exactly the most exciting gadgets these days... that's why you can trust your friends at ThinkGeek to up the ante and deliver the Midnight Shot NV-1 Night Vision Camera. You get 5.0 megapixels and an invisible infrared flash to light up your subjects in total darkness. Or experiment with Infrared photography that lets you do crazy stuff like see through some types of fabric and materials. The Midnight Shot NV-1 Night Vision Camera is switchable between standard photography mode and infrared night-shot mode. When you enter night-shot the infrared blocking filter normally over the lens retracts to let all infrared light through, at the same time a super-bright IR LED invisibly illuminates (to your eyes) the entire scene. You'll notice that during the daytime in night vision mode you can see through some types of clothing, paper and other various thin materials. This is because infrared light can penetrate these surfaces while light visible to the human eye bounces off. The Midnight Shot NV-1 sees both visible light and infrared light, making both viewable to humans. If you want to accentuate this effect you can make your own (or buy) an infrared filter which allows only infrared light to pass through, eliminating the visible light spectrum. Here are some details: http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/04/the-improved-diy-infrared-filter-for-stygian-photogs/ Important Note: Respect the privacy of your fellow humans and don't use the Midnight Shot NV-1 Night Vision Camera for evil. Melodyhorn Air Powered Synth

Melodyhorn Air Powered Synth

Maybe steampunk is a little bit of a stretch. After all, this is made of plastic. But we know you steampunk and cosplay folks. Just because it's plastic doesn't mean you won't paint it to look all oxidized and old-timey. Then you can waltz about in your long coat and goggles and play tunes on your melodyhorn. Or perhaps you could do a Sideshow Mel type character and express yourself solely through music for the entire convention. (Let us know how that goes - especially when you're trying to order lunch. Remember, a G7 chord means, "No onions.") The Melodyhorn is a brand of melodica. It has the keys of a piano, is played like a woodwind instrument, but is polyphonic like a keyboard or a harmonica. Before you start thinking we're crazy for bringing you a wacky frankeninstrument, take a look at this list of famous recording artists who have used the melodica on their albums or in their live shows: Ben Folds, Faith No More, Oasis, Depeche Mode, The String Cheese Incident, Cake, Cyndi Lauper, Indigo Girls, Herbie Hancock, and even The Beatles. Ever wondered what instrument plays the opening theme song to the US version of the TV sitcom The Office? That's a melodica, too. Get in on the hottest, wackiest musical trend and wrap your lips around this steampunk synth!

Aluminum Sound Tube MP3 Speaker

Aluminum Sound Tube MP3 Speaker

"Aluminum tube, ThinkGeek? RLY?" Yes, rly. We're serious about music and were shocked when we tried out the Aluminum Sound Tube mp3 Speaker for the first time. It sounds just like a full size speaker and gets surprisingly loud. All this from an aluminum tube the size of a tube of toilet paper. Perhaps the days of "bigger is better" for speakers are finally going away? It even has a built-in mp3 player and rechargeable battery, so it can play music without being connected to anything. Now you have a choice – connect it to your iPod or leave your iPod at home and just bring your tunes and your speaker. You can even attach it to your bicycle handlebars and menace the neighborhood.

Otamatone Electronic Instrument

Otamatone Electronic Instrument

Most musical instruments don't have faces. It's a shame, really, as almost everything can be made better with a cute face. Well, fear not friends, as we've found one of the cutest musical instruments ever - and it has a face! It's straight from Japan, and it's called the Otamatone Electronic Instrument. We'll give you a little idea of how this adorable thing works, we'll show you a little video of it in action, and then we'll set you off on your merry way to sing your own songs. Ok, so in theory, playing the Otamatone Electronic Instrument is unbelievably easy. You place your finger on the stem to select the pitch. To get vibrato (or any sort of wah-wah effects), you just squeeze the note's rubber cheeks repeatedly. This will open and close the little dude's mouth. Now, we did say easy in theory. That's because the strip on the stem has no pitch labels or frets, so you really have to have a good ear. That said, you can easily just slide between notes, both for ease of playing and for even more musical effect. The Otamatone Electronic Instrument is wacky, adorable, distinctive, and can be a great instrument for some unique electronic performances.

USB Classic Joystick

USB Classic Joystick

We at ThinkGeek are skeptical of product claims. We pour all our experience with technology, actual and science-fictional, into analyzing the specs, and we generally make the right choices: we bought classic Macs and Sidekicks and loved them, yet deftly avoided PC Juniors and Windows Mobile phones. Okay, well, there was NGAGE... Anyway, when this guy we know showed us a slick glossy ad ripped from the inside cover of the September 2010 issue of "Compute!" advertising a new console with 80M-polysprite-per-second HVIA graphics and integrated Arcadiaworld Uplink, well, we thought it over seriously. For a millisecond. Then we entrusted our money order to the alternate universe of its origin. Four-to-six weeks later, a brand-new rainbow-striped box with the classic Fuji logo appeared on our desk. The system is beautiful, with its gleaming black finish with real wood inlay and a glowing touch-sensitive control panel (we think it's some sort of EL e-ink), but our HD monitors, 10 gigabit Ethernet, and THX-certified surround system are useless in the face of its 9 RCA "hypervideo" connectors, three-cup acoustic coupler, and something called an "audio overthruster." So we're tabling the inter-dimensional graymarket plans for the most part -- with one exception! In a twist of fate, just like modern consoles from our universe, the controllers -- still proudly labeled "joysticks" -- connect to USB! We've tested these joysticks thoroughly with classic Atari 2600 games from our universe via our Macs and PCs using the terrific Stella emulator, but it also works as a standard USB joystick! We'll post our reviews of Combat XIII and Outlaw 3D as soon as we reverse-engineer the rest of the interfaces. Warning: These USB joysticks do not connect to classic Atari hardware. They're USB. USB wasn't even invented until 1996! How to Play Halo on a Virtual Atari 2600 Former Halo team lead Ed Fries started tinkering with Atari 2600 programming in late 2009. A year later, he'd hacked his way to a nice 2-D version of Halo -- he even had a limited run of cartridges made! How to play: Plug your USB Classic Joystick into your PC or Mac Download Stella for Windows, Linux, or OS X Download Halo 2600 Open Stella Select Halo2600_final.bin Stare slack-jawed at the awesome animated title screen Press Fire to start

YouRock MIDI Electric Guitar

YouRock MIDI Electric Guitar

The musicians at ThinkGeek HQ have been having a major geekfest over the YouRock MIDI Electric Guitar. Even merchant monkey Chris is intrigued, and he's a total saxist. We could lay on the funny, but this instrument is serious business, so serious monkey is going to be serious, okay? What is the YouRock Guitar? It's an electric guitar that never needs tuning. That's right, you can skip right over the out-of-tune-and-awful stage of learning guitar and get straight to the good stuff. Even professional guitar players are shocked at how great the YouRock feels and sounds. The speed of the triggering, sliding, and articulation make this one awesome axe. It's a full-fledged MIDI controller. Most MIDI controllers out there are in keyboard form. This is great if you're a pianist, but if you're a guitar god, trying to get your great riff from your brain into your computer via a set of imitation ivories can be difficult. Now you can load up your favorite multi-track recording or sequencing software, plug in your YouRock, and output MIDI data directly. Look Ma, no keys! It's a synthesizer in guitar form. The YouRock is 25 guitars, 50 synths, 25 tracks, and 50 drum tracks all in one package. Experiment with 50 different tunings with just the click of a button. Be whatever you want to be, instantly. It's a Rock Band controller. If you've ever wanted to feel more badass while pressing those green, red, yellow, blue, and orange keys, you can use the YouRock Guitar as a controller for Rock Band. It's totally portable. With the pre-built samples, a headphone jack, and MIDI all in a relatively small package, you can lay down ideas, record, and write all from one device and your laptop. Set up in your bedroom, your office during your lunch break, or even your hotel room if you're on the road. Never lose that great idea again! The one-of-a-kind You Rock touch sensitive fretboard feels just like a real guitar. Designed to be accurate and responsive while maintaining a "real" guitar feel. The best part about the YouRock Guitar is the price. You can get all of these things separately, but to have them all in one instrument for under $200 is absolutely the crazy-awesomest part of the YouRock Guitar.
